On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a new eviction moratorium, a few days after the previous ban expired. This happened in large part thanks to the activism and leadership of Congresswoman Cori Bush [[link removed]] , who slept on the steps of the U.S. Capitol for five days to protest her House colleagues’ refusal to extend the moratorium. Her story—of being a formerly unhoused single mother to a now-Congresswoman—and how she used her experiences to pressure her colleagues and the Biden administration into acting is a reminder of why we need more leaders like her in all levels of our government.

Today marks 56 years since President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act [[link removed]] into law. However, a Supreme Court decision in 2013, and another last month, has significantly weakened it, leaving our right to vote at risk. Legislatures in 18 states across the country have taken advantage of these rulings to enact 30 new laws this year alone that target BIPOC and New American voters, as well as young and working-class people. It’s up to us to continue to fight for a democracy where everyone can fully participate and elect leaders who will protect our right to vote.
