Today marks the 56th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 -- one of the most substantial pieces of civil rights legislation in American history, that galvanized the right to vote for Black Americans after decades of deep organizing and non-violent protests led by Black organizers. For nearly 50 years the VRA protected the right to vote from threats large and small. But, a damaging 2013 Supreme Court ruling gutted its most critical tenants. 

The fight for the right to vote continues as our democracy is under attack right now. That’s why, to help keep the promise of the VRA, Michelle Obama and Stacey Abrams are teaming up to call on all Americans to fight to protect our freedom to vote, and demand that Congress pass the For the People Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. 

In 2021, dangerous legislation has been passed and  proposed across the country that limits the freedom to vote, to safely cast our ballots, and have our votes counted. Many of these proposals WOULD disproportionately impact Black, Brown, young, working-class voters, and voters with disabilities. They’re counting on us to stop paying attention. They’re counting on us to be quiet. But they must not know who we are. Our work is just beginning.

As Michelle Obama and Stacey Abrams said, this fight isn’t about who’s President or who’s in Congress. It’s about our families, our neighbors, our schools, and our communities. It’s about a country that belongs to all of us. And it’s about ensuring our freedom to vote and our ability to make our voices heard. We need you in this fight with us to build the country we all deserve -- that’s what our progress demands. 

We’re calling on members of Congress every day to tell them to protect and strengthen our access to the ballot. We’re checking our voter registration status and ensuring everyone in our community is registered to vote. And we’re working to change the future of this nation. It’s not going to be easy, but nothing this important ever is.
