Hi John --

Last weekend, Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, speaking before a fundraising crowd about taking back the House, said: "I want you to watch Nancy Pelosi hand me that gavel. ... It will be hard not to hit her with it.”

You read that right. Only seven months after insurrectionists stormed the Capitol and violently targeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, McCarthy used this speaking opportunity to make a crass comment about assaulting her.

McCarthy's so-called joke about hitting a woman isn't surprising. After all, this is the same man who voted against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act earlier this year, and he has denied that the Republican party has “a woman problem” (we beg to differ).

Unfortunately, violent comments hurled at women in power aren't an anomaly -- they're a frequent occurrence from Republicans.

Utterances like these are rooted in ignorance and misogyny, and we're sick of hearing them. Women in Congress still face constant threats while trying to do their jobs, and comments like these simply make matters worse. From Speaker Pelosi to Vice President Kamala Harris, we have to show women in public office that they have our support.
