Dear MoveOn member,
It is a great honor that I serve in the U.S. Congress in the same district that was long represented by civil rights champion John Lewis, my mentor. In succeeding him in this seat, I also strive to continue his legacy to fight for civil rights and voting rights for all people—which is why I'm writing for your help today, the 56th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.
Our democracy is facing a five-alarm fire—and we need Democrats to act with urgency, throw aside D.C. business-as-usual, and pass bills like the For the People Act, a transformative bill that will fundamentally protect our multiracial democracy and voting rights, before it's too late.
In state after state, Republican lawmakers are passing laws to make it harder to vote—laws that will especially impact people of color, working people, and people with disabilities. And in Washington, D.C., Republicans are using the filibuster—the Jim Crow-era tool that was used to block anti-lynching bills and voting rights legislation—to block the Democratic majority from protecting voting rights today.
And while President Biden has identified this as a crisis, he has not yet put his full weight behind the solution. Time is running out, and we need him to act with urgency before it's too late.
The For the People Act includes proven, comprehensive provisions that would protect the freedom to vote, end partisan gerrymandering, limit Big Money’s stranglehold on our democracy, hold elected officials to a higher ethical standard, and so much more.
Democrats have the power to get this done and protect our freedom to vote. Voting rights are a nationally popular issue. Democrats hold the majority. Our democracy can’t wait—and we can’t risk our future in futile hopes that Mitch McConnell will come to the negotiating table. If Biden doesn’t take bold action right now, he’ll be handing control of many of his top priorities and his legacy over to McConnell.
Thanks!
–Congresswoman Nikema Williams
