Hello —

On this day in 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law banning discrimination at the ballot box.

Civil Rights heroes like Congressman John Lewis risked their lives for the right to vote. They marched, bloodied and bruised, for the chance to exert their Constitutional right to have their voice heard.

But in 2013 and again just last month, the Supreme Court has gutted the Voting Rights Act. In addition, Republicans have enacted voter suppression legislation in states across the country.

After Donald Trump and his allies spread misinformation and lies — falsely claiming that the 2020 election was stolen from him — over 400 bills restricting voting rights were introduced in 49 states. That’s in 2021 alone.

Republicans are framing these bills as attempts to fight voter fraud, but we know the truth: this is the GOP’s attempt to suppress the vote in order to win future elections, and it’s unacceptable.

Republicans have known for a long time that if more people vote, they lose. So, in a desperate attempt to keep their grip on power, they are resorting to undermining our democracy and locking people out of the ballot box. We can’t let them get away with it.

If you’re with me, add your name to my petition demanding Congress pass voting rights protections like the For the People Act to protect access to the ballot box.
