John, today is the 56th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Almost six decades after this landmark bill was signed into law by President Johnson, too many Americans still lack access to the most basic of civil rights: the ability to easily and safely cast their ballot.

Today, we thank all of the LGBTQ elected officials who are standing for the ballot by speaking out and taking action. Take a look at just a few (click the photos to read more):

Voting rights are essential to increasing representation for the LGBTQ community and all other marginalized communities. There are many fights ahead, but we are grateful to those doing the hard work to make change.
