Friend,

Today marks the 56th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, landmark legislation that my friend, the late Congressman John Lewis, fought and bled for. The Voting Rights Act expanded access to the ballot box, prohibiting racial discrimination in voting. Its positive impact was felt almost immediately with high voter turnout in Black communities across the country.

As we commemorate the anniversary of this historic law, it's more important than ever that we commit to protecting the right to vote. The truth is the right to vote is under attack like never before, and these attacks disproportionately harm Black voters, other voters of color, students, and seniors.

In 2021 alone, more than 385 new laws have been proposed in 48 states to limit mail-in voting, early in-person voting, and Election Day voting. Twenty-two of these voter suppression bills have already become law. Congress must act before any more are enacted.

Let's be clear: if our government isn't working for the people, then it's not really working at all. Disenfranchising voters undermines the principles of our republic -- and is not how we ensure we're delivering results for hard-working Americans.

That's why I'm committed to doing everything I can to get Congress back to work for the people. Already, I've proudly co-sponsored the For the People Act to defend our democracy and the right to vote -- and it includes two of my original bills. And I'm working in Congress to bring the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to a vote.

I need to know if you're with me in this fight for democracy reform, team. Will you let me know by adding your name today? Commit to creating a government that works for all Americans »

Thank you. It's an honor to represent you,

Derek
