Today marks the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act — a monumental step toward extending the right to vote and ending racial discrimination at the ballot box.
But 56 years later, the landmark legislation looks a lot different after being gutted by Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell’s handpicked Supreme Court.
This year alone, Republicans have introduced hundreds of bills in state legislatures across the country attempting to make it harder for folks to cast their ballot, and a few of them have passed — blatant voter suppression in the form of strict discriminatory ID requirements, limited ballot drop boxes, and shortened runoff elections.
In June, we had an opportunity to put a stop to this once and for all by passing the For the People Act. But Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans put their own self interests over your right to vote and filibustered the critical bill without a vote or even a debate.
Enough is enough. Congress must act.
I am calling on the Senate to pass voting rights legislation to protect our democracy — and if we have to eliminate the filibuster to get it done, I’m all for that. Please, sign your name next to mine:
