Today we’re celebrating the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, which President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law on August 6, 1965.

The Voting Rights Act transformed electoral participation in our country. It prohibited discrimination based on race or ethnicity and created review requirements for areas with a history of discriminatory voting policies. 

But unfortunately, the Voting Rights Act is not as strong and impactful as it once was. Supreme Court cases in 2013 and 2021 have significantly weakened provisions of the law, making it easier for extremist politicians to restrict voting rights all around the country. 

That’s why we need to learn about the legislation that Senators are considering to promote the freedom to vote. Learn more about the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and how they would strengthen voting rights →
