In June, I was approved for DACA for the very first time. I migrated to the United States when I was three years old, but lived undocumented for nearly 17 years.
This was supposed to be a celebratory moment for me and my father. He is also eligible for DACA, and we always imagined getting our applications approved together.
But he never heard back about his application. Now, a federal judge in Texas has partially blocked the DACA program, meaning no more new applications will be accepted.
The truth is, my father and our communities should have never faced this ruling in the first place. We have progressed past the need for temporary solutions like DACA — we need a pathway to citizenship now.

Judge Hanen's ruling means the door to DACA has been shut and locked once again. As a result, my father and over 80,000 first-time applicants are left waiting for a potentially life-changing response that now may never come.
This cruel decision is a reminder that DACA will never be enough to protect immigrant communities. Only a pathway to citizenship can protect immigrant youth, temporary protective status holders, farm workers, essential workers, and those who were never eligible for DACA, including my mother, from the threat of deportation.
