Fifty-six years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act—one of the most consequential pieces of legislation in our nation’s history—into law.

Within months of its passage, hundreds of thousands of Americans—particularly Black Americans—registered to vote for the first time. In Mississippi alone, voter registration among Black voters rose from 7 percent in 1964 to nearly 60 percent in 1967.

Yet for the past decade, the Supreme Court has systematically dismantled key provisions of the Voting Rights Act, paving the way for states like Arizona, Georgia and Texas to introduce voter suppression laws that disproportionately impact voters of color.

Enough. We must fight back.
