Friend, In the wake of Donald Trump’s presidency, the far right hasn’t backed down. Keep reading to preview a few top Hatewatch stories you may have missed this summer. We hope you’ll take a look and check out Hatewatch, the SPLC blog monitoring and exposing the American radical right, to stay updated on the consequences of hate and extremism in our country. In Plain Sight: Uncovering Border Patrol’s Relationship with Far-Right Militias at the Southern Border As militias on the border have become more brazen in recent months, it appears some Border Patrol agents have turned a blind eye to their activities. Hatewatch has reviewed several videos of Border Patrol agents interacting with these border militia members, in some cases even appearing to have established friendly relationships. The group, Veterans on Patrol (VOP), an SPLC-designated antigovernment militia group, has documented the militia coalition’s activities on platforms such as Telegram, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook, detailing detainments in the region. In messages posted to VOP’s telegram channel, vigilante “operations” show how VOP, along with other groups such as AZ Desert Guardians and United People of America, have stopped, interrogated and siphoned migrants into the hands of Border Patrol agents. Donors Pumped Millions into White Nationalist Group Donors gave the prominent white nationalist hate group VDARE $4.3 million in 2019, over eight times more than the year before, according to tax records the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) obtained and shared with Hatewatch. The large sum represents an unprecedented annual haul for an American white nationalist group and suggests that big-money donors of the conservative movement may be moving their riches to more extreme causes in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s rise. In an era when white nationalists increasingly embrace decentralized online activism, VDARE stands out for its organizational prowess and links to power. Hatewatch connected former Trump administration officials Stephen Miller and Julia Hahn to its founder, Peter Brimelow, in a series of stories. Tweeting Hate: SPLC analysis shows that Twitter has failed to address its use by far-right extremists and was a major tool in the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection Six months after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Twitter continues to be a major tool for far-right extremists, facilitating and boosting their efforts, and – if left unchecked – will likely enable politically motivated violence again, according to a report released this week by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project. The report, titled, “‘We Make Mistakes:’ Twitter’s Embrace of the Extreme Far Right,” documents the company’s failure to address the use of its social media platform to spread disinformation and highlights its complicity in the far-right movement by amplifying those voices. In solidarity, Your friends at the Southern Poverty Law Center
