1965 Voting Rights Act Anniversary
Congress has days to act before the U.S. Census Bureau’s redistricting data will be released, with states like Texas, Ohio, and North Carolina expected to conduct an aggressive gerrymander this year.
Add your name to my urgent petition demanding the Senate pass new voting rights legislation to ban partisan gerrymandering. If the Senate fails to act this month, Democrats could lose power for a decade to this abusive process. [[link removed]]

49 states have voter suppression bills sitting in their legislative chambers.
More than 400 bills total.
And at least 30 new voter suppression laws have been enacted in 18 states.
That’s all happened in the past 7 months.
Republicans and outside groups like the right-wing Heritage Foundation have used Donald Trump’s relentless lies to justify the largest, most concerted assault on voting rights since Jim Crow. And unless Congress acts this month, the GOP will begin the process of locking Democrats out of power for the next decade through partisan gerrymandering.
Now this may sound like inside baseball, but it’s critical: Next Thursday, the U.S. Census Bureau will release the data state legislatures require for redistricting. And redistricting alone could be enough for Republicans to take the House back.
We just need to look back to 2010 and the Tea Party midterm wave to understand the impact this could have. Only this time, the GOP is led by a would-be authoritarian, supported by a party devoid of principles, and little more than a conspiratorial cult of personality.
The GOP House caucus is populated by conspiracy theorists and white supremacists led by Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who recently made light of violence against Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. It’s unacceptable. Undignified. Dangerous.
We cannot let their voter suppression efforts prevail.
For years, the Voting Rights Act’s protections have been methodically stripped away by a conservative Supreme Court engineered by Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump.
In 2013, the Court struck down the Voting Rights Act’s provision on federal preclearance — which had required the Department of Justice to approve voting legislation in states with histories of voter suppression. That opened the proverbial floodgates.
In 2016, Donald Trump made baseless allegations of voter fraud, and the next year signed an executive order creating a short-lived, so-called “Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.” It was a grim sign of what was yet to come.
Then in 2019, the Supreme Court ruled that federal courts would not intervene to stop partisan redistricting, dealing yet another blow to the Voting Rights Act.
We have seen the political and human cost of this GOP assault on voting rights and democracy. The stakes are clear. The time to act is now.
Today, with our democracy under extreme duress, and the original protections of the Voting Rights Act stripped away, we must recognize the 56th anniversary of this landmark civil rights bill by honoring it with action.
Add your name to my petition. Demand the Senate pass new voting rights legislation to ban partisan gerrymandering before the August recess. The Senate cannot go on vacation while our democracy is at risk. [[link removed]]

Let’s get it done. Our democracy literally depends on it.
