Team,
On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law. The Voting Rights Act protects the most critical part of our democracy -- the right of all Americans to make their voices heard. Today, we’re celebrating the Voting Rights Act for all that it accomplished, but the fight to protect and expand voting rights is far from over.
DEFEND VOTING RIGHTS [[link removed]] Last month, Texas Democrats were forced to leave the state in order to block harmful legislation that would make it harder for Texans to vote. In the middle of a pandemic, the Texas GOP wants to restrict early and drive-through voting, and make it harder to request an absentee ballot -- all measures that make it safer and easier for folks to vote.
If the GOP gets its way, countless voters will be disenfranchised.
Our Democratic House majority is fighting to pass H.R.1, the For the People Act. If passed, this bill would protect the provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and prevent unnecessary and undemocratic measures that undermine your right to vote -- like the restrictions Texas Republicans are trying to impose as we speak.
Fifty-six years after the passage of the Voting Rights Act, Republicans are doing everything they can to suppress the vote and steal elections. Will you add your name to our petition to demand that Congress pass the For the People Act to protect and expand on the legacy of the Voting Rights Act? [[link removed]]
