Weekly InSight
This week, InSight Crime looks at the muddied investigation into the murder of Haiti President Jovenel Moïse, and how gang boss Jimmy Chérizier, alias "Barbecue,” is positioning himself to take advantage of the power vacuum, railing against police and political elites as he marches with supporters of the slain president. In Guatemala, meanwhile, new documents reveal Attorney General Consuelo Porras’ attempts to limit the scope of corruption investigations prior to the firing of top prosecutor Juan Francisco Sandoval. Other notable articles include a report on how cartel extermination sites in Mexico are exposing the scale of victims of drug-related violence. Local mayors in El Salvador are profiting from migrant-smuggling rings, while Spanish authorities blame Dominican gangs for spiraling violence around Madrid.

3 Takeaways from Jovenel Moïse’s Murder Investigation in Haiti

Nearly a month after the midnight assassination of former Haiti President Jovenel Moïse, many of the details about the murder plot remain murky despite scores of arrests.

Since the July 7 murder, authorities in Haiti have taken into custody more than 40 people - including 18 former Colombian soldiers suspected of being part of a hit team that entered the former president’s private residence, where he was shot multiple times.

InSight Crime Works with NGO Fighting Human Trafficking with Data

InSight Crime has signed a cooperation agreement with Traffik Analysis Hub, a system that aims to disrupt human trafficking networks using big data. Gathering data from government officials, authorities, courts, and non-governmental organizations, the platform’s IBM software leverages machine learning to discover routes, trafficking hotspots and modus operandi. The system has compiled more than 890,000 incident reports – an indication of the scale of this global illegal industry. Information sharing with Traffik Analysis Hub is the upshot of InSight Crime having made it a priority to investigate human trafficking along the US-Mexico border and in Venezuela, where the mass exodus of millions of refugees to neighboring countries leaves women and children vulnerable to exploitation and recruitment by criminal groups.

Call for Interns!

InSight Crime is looking for some of the best and brightest to be part of our Fall internship class. Our interns don’t make coffee – they do investigative work from day one, researching criminal organizations, gathering material for investigations, fact-checking and writing for our website. Many have gone on to become key staffers, while others have become our ambassadors at NGOs, government agencies and think tanks across the Americas and beyond.
