This week, InSight Crime looks at the muddied investigation into the murder of Haiti President Jovenel Moïse, and how gang boss Jimmy Chérizier, alias "Barbecue,” is positioning himself to take advantage of the power vacuum, railing against police and political elites as he marches with supporters of the slain president. In Guatemala, meanwhile, new documents reveal Attorney General Consuelo Porras’ attempts to limit the scope of corruption investigations prior to the firing of top prosecutor Juan Francisco Sandoval. Other notable articles include a report on how cartel extermination sites in Mexico are exposing the scale of victims of drug-related violence. Local mayors in El Salvador are profiting from migrant-smuggling rings, while Spanish authorities blame Dominican gangs for spiraling violence around Madrid.

** InSight Crime Works with NGO Fighting Human Trafficking with Data
------------------------------------------------------------
InSight Crime has signed a cooperation agreement with Traffik Analysis Hub ([link removed]) , a system that aims to disrupt human trafficking networks using big data. Gathering data from government officials, authorities, courts, and non-governmental organizations, the platform’s IBM software leverages machine learning to discover routes, trafficking hotspots and modus operandi. The system has compiled more than 890,000 incident reports – an indication of the scale of this global illegal industry. Information sharing with Traffik Analysis Hub is the upshot of InSight Crime having made it a priority to investigate human trafficking along the US-Mexico border and in Venezuela, where the mass exodus of millions of refugees to neighboring countries leaves women and children vulnerable to exploitation and recruitment by criminal groups.
