In 2016, Salvadoran Evelyn Hernandez suffered life-threatening health complications during her pregnancy, which led to her losing the baby. Because of the country’s inhumane abortion laws, she was charged with murder.

Instead of being given support after the tragedy, she was arrested, charged with aggravated homicide and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

After having the sentence overturned in 2018, Salvadoran Public Prosecutor’s Office decided it will appeal the decision and she again faces trial.

El Salvador has one of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the world. Abortion is illegal in all circumstances, including cases like Evelyn’s where she had no control over what happened. Unfortunately, Evelyn is not the only one in this situation. There are at least 16 women in jail or facing charges for losing their baby during pregnancy.

These ridiculous punishments must stop. We must come together and show Evelyn and women of El Salvador that they are not alone. Please take action now and demand all charges against Evelyn are dropped
