Dear John
Help us protect UK democracy
Take a stand against the government’s insidious power grab and its
attempts to stifle the voice of civil society
This is worrying time for democracy. The Government is attempting
to push through a new Election Bill. This is designed to make the UK
less democratic by giving Ministers unprecedented and
unchecked powers to stifle opposition, deter participation in
elections and establish an unequal playing field for future elections
in favour of those already in power.
At the same time, the recently passed Police, Crime, Sentencing and
Courts Bill will clamp down on our right to protest with harsh
punishments for causing ‘serious annoyance’ and strict regulations on
even single person protests. The Home Secretary will have the
power to determine what constitutes ‘serious annoyance’.
Clearly, the Government seeks to establish laws which
will make it harder for civil society to hold power to
account.
This isn’t something we can take lying down. Don’t let
this Government’s attempts to undermine democracy succeed. Add
your name to our petition and take a stand.
Both Bills will be back in front of parliament
in the first two weeks of September. Take this opportunity
now to take a stand - and help us build a clear public opposition to
the erosion of our democratic values.
Best wishes,
Maheen Behrana
