John,
Fifty-six years ago today, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act in a historic ceremony in the U.S. Capitol. It marked a turning point in the fight to guarantee every American the right to vote and have their vote counted, in part by subjecting states with histories of systematic discrimination in voting to strict federal oversight of their election procedures.
While the Voting Rights Act never solved all of our democracy’s problems, it proved to be a powerful weapon against those who would try to stop eligible voters from casting a ballot. But that changed in 2013, when the conservative majority on the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice John Roberts invalidated key parts of the law.
In the Shelby County decision, the Court gutted the preclearance requirement for states with a history of discrimination. As expected, some Republican-controlled states rushed immediately to pass strict new voting rules in an effort to lower turnout in Democratic-leaning communities.
Since 2013, conservatives on the Supreme Court have continued chipping away at voting protections. The NDRC is working hard to fight back and defend the right to vote, but at the end of the day Congress has the power to restore the law it first passed 56 years ago today.
That’s why, along with our state-by-state strategy to combat gerrymandering and voter suppression, we’re supporting the restoration of the Voting Rights Act and other federal democracy reform legislation that will help stop the Republican assault on the freedom to vote. And we’re counting on your grassroots support to keep up our fight.
If you can, will you make a donation to the NDRC today to help us continue fighting to protect every American’s right to vote?
