Dear John,
It’s sometimes easy to forget that, even in dark times, hope springs eternal. Tuesday offered one reminder of that and one defeat.
Last weekend, the federal election moratorium expired, exposing millions of Americans to potential eviction in the midst of a once again mounting pandemic.
Activists in Washington D.C. joined by Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) camped on the steps of Congress in protest. As it often does, her direct action created limitless opportunities for the movement, from the visibility that media coverage offered to the connections among participants.
Yesterday, the Biden administration announced that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is crafting a policy that “in some way covers close to 90 percent of the American people or renters.”
This victory would not have been possible without the millions of voices around the country from coast-to-coast helping force the issue.
We’ve seen direct action shift federal policy on issues from housing to immigration, and foreign policy to civil rights. Can you help send us to Congress to back up Cori, Ilhan, and Rashida?
After the announcement about federal concessions extending the eviction moratorium, our attention was brought to former Ohio state senator, co-chair of Bernie Sanders 2020 presidential campaign, and hero to millions Nina Turner who narrowly lost her primary to a corporate democrat in Ohio's 11th congressional district.
Nina‘s gut wrenching defeat reminds me of the words Senator Bernie Sanders used upon his two Presidential defeats-- "the struggle continues". Bernie continued to state that our progressive movement appreciates that not only are we winning the struggle ideologically, we are also winning it generationally, regardless of setbacks. Healthcare and judicial reform have overwhelming favorability, as well as equality. That was not the case just five years ago.
So we must continue to fight.
Can you help send us to Washington to expand it, while removing a central pillar of the establishment that undermines their voices?
With your support, we can grow the wedge of visionary policymakers that battling the centrist establishment. Visionaries that are committed to universal healthcare, climate justice, and racial justice.
It is frankly shameful to see coastal enclaves proud of their progressive commitments, like San Francisco, lag so far behind.
Want a voice in Washington who San Francisco can be proud of? Together, we’ve challenged establishment power for 20 years, endured character assassination, won more votes than any previous challenger to the current Speaker of the House—and we’re ready to finish the job.
Thank you so much for standing with us!
Warm regards,
Shahid
