John -- next term the Supreme Court will hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a blockbuster case from Mississippi that’s part of a coordinated, nationwide push to chip away at Roe v. Wade and ultimately see it overturned.

Here is what you need to know about Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization:

The fundamental holding in Roe v. Wade is that a pregnant person has a constitutional right to an abortion and a state can’t ban abortion prior to the point of viability.

That fundamental holding has been the law of the land for nearly fifty years, and the Supreme Court has repeatedly reaffirmed its validity.

But in 2018, Mississippi passed a brazenly unconstitutional law banning abortion after fifteen weeks of pregnancy -- indisputably before the point of viability.

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to consider a challenge to the law, and will decide on the case by next summer.

Make no mistake -- this case is a direct threat to Roe v. Wade and to the constitutional right to an abortion. If the Supreme Court sides with Mississippi, further weakening or even overturning Roe v. Wade, dozens of states would likely take swift action to prohibit abortion outright.
