Hi John,
COVID-19 is picking back up at a concerning rate, some states are reporting record virus transmission -- higher than what they saw before we had vaccines. The surge, driven by variants and vaccine misinformation, threatens our hard-won progress and people's lives.
Now, the subtext to this surge -- of course -- includes the countless Republican electeds who choose to make masks and vaccines a partisan hot topic instead of commonsense protection.
One-third of COVID-19 cases nationwide last week were in Florida and Texas. At that same time, Florida Governor DeSantis signed an executive order forcing all school districts to drop their mask mandate or lose state funding.
And just this past Monday Texas Governor Abbott signed an executive order banning mask mandates and threatened fines for localities and businesses that attempt to enforce vaccine or mask requirements.
This is all pretty bad, but we are not helpless to fight back. This surge (and Republicans' failed response to it) is a reminder that who we elect to school boards, city councils, county commissions, and state legislatures matters. If we can elect state and local officials who trust in science and value the lives of their constituents, we can save lives.
We need to continue supporting and electing progressives who will work to ensure that the vaccine is accessible, protect students in schools who are still too young to get vaccinated, distribute the $42 billion still available in rent relief, and lead with compassion instead of partisanship.
You do that every day by being a part of Run for Something, John. If you've signed up to run, shared our candidates with social media or your circle of friends, donated a little of your hard-earned money, or volunteered your time -- you're making an impact in the fight.
We just need to keep fighting.
