As the new Deputy Political Director for Voter Registration, registering Texans is my #1 priority.

Hi Friend,

Right now, I’m wrapping up my second week here at the Texas Democratic Party -- as the new Deputy Political Director for Voter Registration. And with Texas Democrats making national headlines in the fight for voting rights -- and the Governor's new call for a Special Session to continue Republican attacks on our right to vote beginning in two days -- this is the moment to kick our voter registration program into high gear. So I wanted to introduce myself right away -- because there’s no time to waste.

As you already know, registering new voters is the heart of our strategy to take back Texas in 2022. But as a young Black man, it’s also been my passion for a long time now -- because registering new voters is the pathway to closing the representation gap for communities of color, and uplifting the voices of the new young Black and Brown majority. I know all of us in our Texas Democratic movement are committed to pushing that goal forward. So before I share more about what led me here, and what I’m hoping to get done together, I have to ask: will you rush $7 or whatever you can to jumpstart our voter registration efforts right now?

Like so many young people in politics today, I got my start on the Obama campaign in 2012. Fighting for Obama’s reelection meant a lot to me -- especially because his fight for affordable healthcare directly impacted my family. As both a small business owner and someone with preexisting conditions, my dad had struggled for years to get us healthcare -- and the Affordable Care Act changed life for my family overnight.

That’s a story I have in common with millions of folks, in Texas and beyond. Black and Brown communities, rural communities -- so many Americans share the same struggle in getting access to the most basic things we need: healthcare, transportation, technology infrastructure, jobs. There’s one way we fix this: by getting more people of color engaged in the civic process, so that Black and Brown people can hold our elected officials accountable, and demand more for our communities.

That’s been my core mission in politics for the last decade -- from my experience as a field director on several key state-level and national campaigns, to my time supporting the absolutely incredible work of Black Voters Matter over the past year. Leading our Texas Democratic voter registration push is a continuation of that work. I’m beyond fired up to make sure the voices of Texans of color are heard at the ballot box, and mobilize the rising young Black and Brown majority -- my peers -- to flip the state of Texas.

From voter registration to the national fight for voting rights, Texas is where the rubber meets the road. We are the frontline as Republicans seek to silence Black and Brown Americans -- and Texas Democrats are meeting the moment with the urgency it demands. Project Texas, our strategy to register up to 2 million new Texas Democrats by the 2022 elections, is set to be the largest voter registration program in the country. But we can’t do it without you. Will you chip in $7 or whatever you can right now to power Project Texas, and make sure the voices of the rising Texas electorate are heard?

Let’s mobilize,

Kierran Young
