Friend,
After the expiration of the eviction moratorium last weekend, over three million people were at risk of eviction, even as coronavirus cases surged nationwide.
Congress initially passed the eviction moratorium to help people suffering from lost jobs, illness, and other grave circumstances of the pandemic, and it has been essential in keeping families housed and safe.
The national moratorium expired last weekend because Congress shamefully did not act to extend it before going on recess. But thanks to the heroic protests of Rep. Cori Bush on the steps of the Capitol, President Biden partially extended the national moratorium and saved millions from getting evicted.
But while the protests were raising awareness of this critical issue last weekend, Maryland’s Republican governor Larry Hogan was still insisting that Maryland’s eviction moratorium would expire on August 15 as planned.
Marylanders deserve a governor who believes housing is a human right and will work tirelessly to find solutions to safely keep people in their homes while giving property owners the relief they need. I will be that leader.
That’s why I am calling on Governor Hogan to halt in-state evictions and take a step in addressing the housing crisis here in Maryland. Will you join me by signing your name to our petition to extend the moratorium today? Whether you are a renter, a property owner, or know someone who has been impacted by the moratorium, it’s up to us to show Governor Hogan that housing is a human right.
