Dear Friend,
When asked which Supreme Court decision she would most like to see overturned, Justice Ginsburg replied, “Citizens United.” That decision undermined important campaign finance regulations that protect our democracy. It was based on several flawed premises, including that corporations are people and money is speech. As Colorado’s Attorney General, I will continue to work hard to honor Justice Ginsburg’s wish.
As I run for re-election, I am honored to receive the endorsement of End Citizens United/Let America Vote ([link removed]) , an organization dedicated to defending our democracy. A core part of that work is fighting against the impact of the Citizens United decision. But my work goes beyond the scope of that decision to other important issues facing our democracy and the people of Colorado.
Our democracy faces a range of challenges, as I outlined when I announced that I was running for re-election ([link removed]) . As I stated last January, we need to renew and rebuild the institutions that protect our elections, including protecting voting rights. That’s why I joined other state attorneys general this week in calling on the U.S. Senate to make an exception to the filibuster when voting rights are at stake ([link removed]) .
Our democracy depends on the ability of informed citizens to engage in a battle of ideas, not view those with different opinions as enemies. Unfortunately, as I noted recently in a July 4th talk in Durango ([link removed]) , a generation of students is growing up thinking politics is polarized as opposed to an exchange of ideas. We need to fight the forces--including those driven by big-tech social media platforms--that are driving the rising toxic nature of our politics.
I am running for re-election because I am committed to defending our democracy. I am honored to do that work with the support of End Citizens United/Let America Vote and so many here in Colorado who are fighting to protect our democracy. As we work to build our support for what promises to be a challenging re-election campaign, I appreciate your support. Please contribute what you can to help me build valuable support. Every dollar makes a difference.
