ACLU Supporter, this week is Alejandro Mayorkas' six-month anniversary as Homeland Security Secretary – and six months since signaling his willingness to end the department's anti-immigrant abuses. You can read our full report card on Mayorkas' progress here, but first, take one quick action to hold him accountable: Send a message to Mayorkas to shut down cruel and unjustifiable ICE detention sites now.
As a reminder, while Mayorkas moved to close two detention sites so far, ICE has doubled the number of immigrants and asylum seekers locked up in detention centers under his watch and kept open dozens of facilities with appalling records of abuse and neglect. For the detention sites that are closing, ICE is sometimes choosing to transfer people to other detention facilities rather than release them to their communities and families – jeopardizing the health of detained people and their ability to effectively present their cases. It's clear, ACLU Supporter. This ICE detention machine must end – and Mayorkas has an opportunity to bring lasting change for a more fair and humane system now. Let's make sure he does. Send your message to Secretary Mayorkas today. Thank you for taking action, Isra Chaker |
