Six years after it was scrapped, Baltimore’s Red Line given flicker of hope in federal infrastructure bill

-Baltimore Sun

After two terms of Republican Larry Hogan as governor, Marylanders deserve a leader who will finally support mass public transit projects.

Seven years ago, Maryland was offered hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding for an important project in Baltimore City — the creation of a rail line called the “Red Line” to connect the city from East to West. In development since 2002, the Red Line would have created good-paying jobs for thousands of Marylanders and, upon completion, would have allowed for more equitable access to public transportation.

However, the $2.9 billion project was cancelled by Governor Hogan in 2015, and the transformative opportunity to revitalize neighborhoods in the city by introducing public transportation disappeared.

But with a Federal Infrastructure Bill in the works, there is renewed hope that the Red Line project could again receive federal funding. But this time around, the same problem persists — it will require state and local officials to support the transit project.

We need a governor who will support mass transit projects, not thwart them as Larry Hogan did. We need a governor who will prioritize transportation infrastructure, job creation, and equity. That’s why we need your support to elect John King as Maryland’s next governor. →

As governor, John King will fight for the funding necessary to create the long-overdue Baltimore City Red Line project. And beyond that, he will work to ensure that all communities have improved and more equitable access to public transportation.

We need to elect John King because we need to ensure our state is adequately invested in and that all neighborhoods in Maryland have a chance to thrive. Will you chip in now to elect this bold, progressive leader as our next governor?

Team King
