Republican Opponent Announces

BREAKING: Maggie officially has her first opponent in her race for re-election! Earlier this week, Tracy Tatro Trujillo announced that she would be running to take Maggie's place as New Mexico Secretary of State.

Trujillo has claimed that one of her priorities and reasons for running is ensuring that elections are transparent to voters — but Maggie is already hard at work on that, and she has been highly praised for her significant progress during her time as Secretary of State.

Thanks to Maggie, New Mexico stands out as a leader in pro-democracy practices, fair voting rights, and clean elections — even while so many states across the country have recently faced a rise in voting rights attacks.

But Tracy Trujillo has already shown some strong indication that she doesn't truly have New Mexican voters' best interests at heart and is ready to roll back on voting rights.

“I want voter ID [for elections],” [Trujillo] said. “The only people allowed to do mail-in voting will be overseas military members.”

Unlike Maggie, who is dedicated to making voting easier, more accessible, and less restrictive in order to ensure that every New Mexican has a voice, Trujillo's own statements give an early impression that she has no problem with tightening restrictions.

If Trujillo succeeds in defeating Maggie, it's clear that she won't hesitate to enforce strict new restrictions like voter I.D. requirements and limitations to mail-in voting options. These harmful policies will make it much harder for many people in our state to cast a ballot — particularly people of color and rural communities who are most negatively affected by voting rights attacks and voter suppression tactics. We can't let that happen, Jack.

Maggie has been a staunch fighter and a proven leader when it comes to protecting our democracy and lifting up the voices of New Mexicans. But her first opponent is a Republican who seems to only care about the voices of her own party. Maggie is counting on us to help get her re-elected so that she can keep defending our voting rights.
