August is National Water Quality Month, and with the Southwest and West confronting a severe water crisis, it’s more critical than ever that we protect our nation’s greatest freshwater treasure — our Great Lakes.
Millions of people rely on the water resources of the Great Lakes for drinking water, work, and leisure -- including our region’s local economy; the Great Lakes generate over $60 billion in wages every year.
Ensuring that all Americans have access to clean drinking water is a top priority of mine. That’s why I’m working hard in Congress to ensure the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) is fully funded and meeting the enormous needs of our region. President Trump wanted to eliminate this program. Working in a bipartisan manner, and with the help of supporters like you, we were able to save this essential program.

The GLRI has already made extraordinary progress by removing contaminants from 17 sites and working to mitigate toxic effects at six areas of concern. But as heat waves and droughts intensify -- and freshwater contamination grows rampant -- the Lakes continue to be at risk.
We need to do everything in our power to protect our freshwater, our ecosystem, and the people who depend on this vital resource.
As a member of the Great Lakes Task Force, I am fighting to secure the robust federal investments needed to continue protecting our Great Lakes, and the drinking water for millions of Americans.
