On this campaign, we have worked hard to center the needs of the poor, the working poor, the barely middle class, people of color — everyone who’s been marginalized, left out and left behind.

What we set out to do is to give voice to those people in Ohio’s 11th Congressional District who do not have enough to eat, who worry about paying the bills, who yearn for better schools for their kids, who cannot afford their medicines and who struggle every day to keep their heads above water without a lot of hope of getting ahead.

As you know, this campaign did not happen in isolation. It has always been part of a movement of people across this country who want, in the words of the late great Rep. Barbara Jordan, an America as good as its promise.

Those of us fighting for that America here in Ohio, and in every state in this country, have been on a long justice journey through a desert of despair, indifference, inequality and racism.

My friends, we have looked across at the promised land. But for this campaign, this time, we will not cross the river.

Now, our justice journey continues. And I am proud to continue that journey with each and every one of you.

We will continue this journey until every working person earns a living wage, including passing a $15 minimum wage.

We will continue this journey until every person has health care as a right and not a privilege.

We will continue this journey until childrens’ destinies are not determined by their zip code or the color of their skin.

We will continue this journey until we have torn down racism, sexism, homophobia, religious bigotry and every kind of hatred and discrimination.

We will continue this journey until justice is equal for every person in this country.

And this journey will continue until we have ensured that this planet will be habitable for our children and our grandchildren.

So my friends, it is ok to be sad right now. But come tomorrow we must roll up our sleeves and continue the fight to which we are all committed.

To everyone who gave their time, their talent, and their treasure to this campaign, I want to say this from the bottom of my heart: thank you.

First, to my beautiful family. You are my pillar and my strength. And thanks to my incredible staff and everyone on Team Turner. All the elected officials who had the courage to stand with us and walk the path of justice. Although I cannot thank everyone, I want to thank my mayor Frank Jackson and City Councilman Blaine Griffin; the members of the state legislative delegation who came out early for us: Senators Yuko, Williams, and Antonio and State Reps. Brent, Howse, Boyd, Robinson, Skindell, and Galonski.

My thanks to all the other mayors and local officials who stood with us, including the Black Elected Officials of Summit County. Thanks to the men and women from the house of labor and to all the progressive organizations across the country, including the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Democracy for America, and our dear friends at Our Revolution. And all the incredible faith leaders who were with us.

And thanks to folks who I have worked with for years who came to Cleveland to testify on my behalf, including Representative Ocasio Cortez, the ever-inspirational Dr. Cornel West, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. And my special thanks to my brother, my friend Senator Bernard Sanders.

And finally, thank you again to the tens of thousands of people who volunteered their time and donated their treasure with an average donation of $27.

During this race, we have taken on Wall Street, Big Pharma, the fossil fuel industry, and pretty much every special interest group in Washington, DC.

That struggle does not end now. While this campaign might be over, our movement is not.

I have always believed that change does not come from folks at the top with big titles. Instead, it comes from the ground up.

Our justice journey is not yet over. I promise to keep fighting alongside you to build a better future for ALL of us from the ground on up.
