Week of August 2, 2021

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Update from Steering Committee regarding vacant at-large steering seat:

Steering has reviewed the list of candidates in the context of our workplan for the remainder of the year. Given the current focus on national convention and the imminent shift to work on local convention in October, we believe that the timeline for onboarding a new member of Steering would be too compressed to prepare them to meaningfully take on major chapter responsibilities. We appreciate the interest in building out our chapter infrastructure and processes and encourage members who are interested in leadership to consider running for an elected position for the 2022 calendar year. We also encourage members who are interested in supporting the chapter to fill out the skills survey 2 to work with AdCom on supporting Steering with various chapter projects.

On Tuesday, 17 August, Steering will hold an open house meeting open to all members interested in learning more about how Steering runs its weekly meetings, what’s discussed, and how we make decisions. More information will be shared with members as we get closer to the date.

Thank you and solidarity.

Hollywood Assistant Working Group Meeting

(TODAY) Tuesday, August 3 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

If you’re an assistant in Hollywood, you know how hard it can be to work in this industry: from the mailroom to an exec’s desk, the life of an assistant is underpaid, overworked, and underrepresented.

If you’re interested in changing that, make sure to RSVP to this event, where we’ll discuss the current state of the industry for assistants, the obstacles assistants have towards equitable employment, and what can be done to organize around fair wages and working conditions.

Hollywood Labor is a group within DSA-LA and DSA-LA’s Labor Committee that focuses on issues pertaining to the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. We fight for a Hollywood that works for all workers to fight for a more fair and equitable industry. If you’d like to get involved, please sign up on our intake survey here!

Come join us for a discussion of how to continue our work – and if you’re a new member, learn more about us!

Any questions? Feel free to email us at [email protected]

Mutual Aid Brake Light Repair Training

Wednesday, August 4 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

In preparation for upcoming Free Brake Light Repair Clinics, the Mutual Aid Committee is looking to train potential volunteers — and anybody else interested! –on how to change car brake lights!

It’s a really handy skill and (generally) it’s much easier than you might think if you’ve never tried it before. This training will consist of, essentially, practicing removing and handling the brake lights on our own vehicles. Non-car transit and carpooling are still encouraged, but we will only have the vehicles we bring to practice on, so hands-on experience may be limited by how many vehicles we have on site.

Please RSVP for more details on our meeting location.
