*ADC Helps Put a Stop to the Citizenship Question*

Washington, D.C. | July 17, 2019 | adc.org – As of yesterday, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) and its partners have entered into an agreement with the Department of Justice (DOJ) to that would permanently ban the citizenship question from the 2020 Census. The agreement, which was approved by the judge, officially ends the case brought by ADC and its partners challenging the citizenship question. The Supreme Court remanded the case to the Southern District of New York in late June, as it was not convinced by the DOJ's claims that the data collected from adding a citizenship question would help it to better uphold the Voting Rights Act.

The Court's decision led the President to enact an Executive Order that instructed the Department of Commerce to use administrative records to collect information regarding Citizenship Status. He ordered "all agencies to share information requested by the Department [of Commerce] to the maximum extent permissible under law." The ADC is currently evaluating this executive order and its potential impact on our communities. At this time, we do not believe that this Executive Order gives the agencies any more power than they initially had.

The data collected in the census helps determine the allocation of more than $800 billion in federal resources. The ADC encourages Arab Americans to participate in the Census 2020 in order to ensure that the needs of our communities are heard. As an already underrepresented minority, it is important that Arab Americans use every chance we get to speak up for ourselves. The legal battle may be over, but the ADC still has work to be done. We want to stay prepared for attacks on immigrants and immigrants' rights, working personally with clients who are seeking a safer life in the United States. Your help provides us with the resources we require to protect civil rights. Join the cause for immigrants' rights by donating to ADC today.
