John -- Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, the date on which the average Black woman finally catches up to the amount of money her white male peers earned eight months earlier.

Black women earn 63 cents for every dollar white men earn for the same work. As Shannon Williams, Director of Equal Pay Today, recently noted in an interview with Fortune Magazine, that’s a problem for everyone.

“The issue of equal pay is not just a woman's issue because it trickles down into our families and into our communities, and it trickles down into our overall economy.”

If we eliminated the gender wage gap entirely tomorrow, Black women (who are often the primary breadwinners in their household) would bring home enough additional income to pay for:

• Over 2.5 years of childcare
  
  
• Over 2.5 years of tuition and fees at a 4-year public university
  
  
• Nearly 2 years of rent

Stagnant wages have pushed millions to the brink of survival over the last 40 years. Now with pandemic evictions on the rise, the gender pay gap -- particularly for Black and indigenous women -- means we are the most at risk.

We have a chance to turn this all around, starting right now.
