Dear John,
MPI's National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy is pleased to be partnering with Aspen Community Strategies Group [ [link removed] ] on a project that aims to identify and support the spread of creative strategies and practices that nonprofit organizations have implemented to deliver two-generation services to immigrant families, youth, and children. Please join us next Thursday, August 12 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. ET for the first in a series of webinars that will feature organizations using a range of approaches to successfully reach immigrant families: Building Trust With Immigrant Families: Spreading and Adapting 2Gen Working Practices [ [link removed] ]. Learn how three very different organizations all use innovative approaches and incorporate immigrant voices in program design to build trust within the community. Speakers include: Hispanic Unity Compass (Florida), Denver Public Schools (Colorado), and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge (Louisiana).
The project also features peer learning sessions mirroring the webinar topics and will culminate in the release this winter of four briefs from Aspen CSG and MPI's National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy describing practice challenges and solutions.
Additional topics and dates for the webinars, which will feature MPI speakers, include:
*Working Through Immigrant Status on September 16 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. ET. Participate in a deep-dive discussion on designing and implementing a two-gen program that serves immigrant families when some family members may be unauthorized. Hear strategies for building staff capacity, and accessing funding that can support work with unauthorized immigrant customers and funding that legally can go directly to emergency help for immigrant families. Speakers include Chicago Commons (Illinois) and On the Move (Napa Valley, California).
*Growing Language Skills on October 14 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. ET. Hear new approaches for establishing clear and comprehensible communications to providing two-gen services to immigrant families. Organizations will share their experience translating materials and tailoring language programs for the needs of families. Speakers include CAP Tulsa (Oklahoma) and Charlotte Bilingual Preschool (North Carolina).
*Cultural Competence Secrets to Success on November 10 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. ET. Learn how providers are building cultural competency to better connect with and understand the worldview of the immigrant families they serve. The conversation will explore issues of gender norms, trauma-informed care and immigrant and refugee mental health, and financial literacy. Speakers include the Arab American Family Support Center (New York, New York) and the Family Partnership (Minnesota).
You can find more information on the webinars and peer learning series here [ [link removed] ]. These events are open to anyone interested in learning more about work with immigrant families, and no prior two-Gen knowledge or experience is necessary.
With the COVID-19 pandemic underscoring the two-generation impacts of many of the disparities experienced by immigrants and their children, we hope you will find the various opportunities this project provides to learn about and adapt two-Gen program practices and solutions useful in your work.
Sincerely,
Margie McHugh
