The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs

Tuesday, August 3, 2021

Dear John,

Be sure to register for our latest Policy Spotlight
. On
Thursday, August 12, Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil welcomes
Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, administrator of CMS.

Biosimilars And Drug Prices

Two papers in the new issue
of Health Affairs
discuss biosimilars and
the influence of biologics on drug pricing.

James Robinson and Quentin Jarrion analyzed prices of three prominent
biologics and eleven competing biosimilars

in France's single-payer health system.

"Biosimilar launches are associated with a sequence of price
reductions for the originator biologic, for other biologics that treat
similar conditions, and for all related biosimilars," the authors
found.

In another paper, Victor Van de Wiele and colleagues examine US patent
litigation related to biosimilars
.
They identify two key barriers to a robust market in the US:
noncompliance with steps in the litigation process established by the
Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act, and extensive patenting
of biologic drugs by originator manufacturers.

Catch Jamie Robinson next week on the A Health Podyssey podcast

when he discusses his work.

Today on Health Affairs Blog,  Laura Hermer discusses the Biden
administration's request that the US Supreme Court overturn Medicaid
section 1115 demonstration safeguards
