Today is the anniversary of the El Paso, Texas, shooting that killed 23 people in 2019 and left 23 others wounded. My heart goes out to the victims' loved ones and the survivors of this horrific act of violence.
For many folks, when we think of gun violence -- we think of mass shootings like the one in El Paso. But gun violence is claiming American lives every single day, and it's an especially pervasive problem here in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is now the murder capital of America. There have been at least 314 homicides in the city so far in 2021. That is up 35 percent from this time last year, which was a near-record year. Children are being killed, people are afraid to walk down their own streets, and public locations have turned into shooting galleries. John, this is a crisis.
I sent an urgent message to President Joe Biden and to Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney about the gun violence epidemic plaguing Philly. President Biden announced a task force that will crack down on the source of firearms trafficking. Philadelphia wasn't included in the task force, and that needs to change.
At the same time, Mayor Kenney needs to make an emergency declaration. More and more lives are being taken by gun violence. Federal, state, and local leaders need to take this crisis seriously and start looking for solutions -- because this is do or die.
