As students enter a third school year that has been impacted by the effects of COVID-19, the question of how to support students socially and emotionally is daunting, to say the least. While state and federal policy play an important role in advancing equity in education, the most impactful governing body is the local school board. As school boards across the country both advance and hinder progress towards more equitable school systems, it is crucial for educators, parents, community members, and other policymakers to understand who is on their local board, what actions their school board is taking, and how to advocate to and work with their representatives. In this webinar, hear from former and current school board members as they discuss the challenges and opportunities present in serving on a school board, their reasons for seeking office as a lever of change, and how these bodies can advance racial equity for children.

Learning loss resulting from the summer break from schooling has been an ongoing concern, particularly for low-income students and those with learning disabilities. As the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting virtual instruction continued, the concerns about missed learning grew to a crisis-level, with projections that students could re-enter school buildings a year or more behind. One of the proposed solutions to support students in both the short and long-term is adjusting the school calendar to year-round classroom instruction. Join us for a conversation with policymakers and experts on the school calendar, implications of year-round learning, and what adjustments are being made to address the impact of the pandemic.
