Monday Nature Mystery
We are pleased to announce the winner of our Monday Nature Mystery, Eric Anderson! Please email us your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to: [email protected]
Congratulations to Eric for correctly identifying the caterpillar of the Cecropia Moth ((Hyalophora cecropia). This giant silkworm is described as having a frosted green color with shiny yellow, orange and blue knobs over its body. At one time a common find in urban and suburban areas from Canada, south to Florida and as far west at Texas, its number are declining. Unfortunately, the introduction of a parasitic Tachinid fly used to control the Gypsy Moth populations has been an issue. The Tachinid fly parasitizes the caterpillars. To learn more about this and other caterpillars we suggest reading Caterpillars of Eastern North America by David L. Wagner.
