My name is Wendy R., and I know firsthand that overturning Roe v. Wade will not stop people from getting abortions. It will only deny people access to safe and legal abortions under the care of a trusted provider. In the process, it will strip people of their dignity and cost some people their lives.

When I was 17, New York had not yet recognized the right to abortion. When I found out I was pregnant, I knew I didn't want to be. But securing an abortion before Roe was extremely difficult, and at times dangerous. My parents supported my decision and did everything they could to get me the care I needed. Even so, finding a safe, compassionate doctor to provide that care proved almost impossible.

No one should have to go through what I went through to access basic health care. As scary as my experience was, I know that I'm one of the lucky ones because I survived. I have no regrets about my decision that allowed me to have the future that I wanted. Everyone should have that freedom and more.
