Team Wittman,
Competing in the Olympics for the United States is not only an honor and privilege, it is a responsibility. All around the world, young athletes look up to our American Olympians as leaders - both an example of what hard work and dedication lead to, and as representations of the hope, freedom, and opportunity that our American flag stands for.
I recently signed onto a letter to the Chair of the Board of Directors and the Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee on accountability at the Olympics.
This letter asks that American athletes representing the United States during the Olympic games be reminded of Rule 50 of the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Charter, which states that “no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas.”
I have become increasingly concerned by American athletes using the world stage to selfishly display their anti-American rhetoric through divisive and hateful ideologies.
I genuinely hope the athletes who continue to engage in this misguided behavior understand the weight of their actions and accept the responsibility they hold as examples of the United States.
SHOULD WE HOLD U.S. OLYMPIANS ACCOUNTABLE?
