Jesus promises rest for our souls.

“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light” Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV).

In the book, Gentle and Lowly, author Dane Ortlund discusses this passage in which Jesus chose two words to describe Himself. Why did Jesus choose these interesting descriptors?

Gentle – This Greek word means meek and humble. Jesus is, according to Ortland, "not harsh, reactionary, or easily exasperated." He is the most understanding person in the universe. His natural posture is facing His creation with open arms.

Lowly – This means that Jesus is easily accessible and approachable. He gives us a picture of the essence of His heart towards us.

Jesus knows our lives will be full of toil, labor, and even suffering at times. But He promises rest for our souls. All we have to do is come to experience His gentleness and care. Will you approach Him today with the burdens you carry? He is ready to give you rest.

Praises and Prayers

  • Praise God that college students traveled to three countries with Unto® this summer to share the kindness of Jesus with people living in tough places. Pray for eternal impact on the people they served and that the students will grow through their experience.

  • Pray that God will prepare the hearts of those who will receive aid in the toughest places on earth this summer. Currently five containers are on the way to various locations where our international team members eagerly wait for them to arrive. Pray for favor in clearing customs, getting the aid into each country, and for our local staff members who will distribute the aid and build relationships with the recipients.

  • Pray for people living in East Africa. Severe food insecurity is progressively worsening as diseases prevent people from earning income to buy food and pests overtake the land, affecting crops. Pray that God will provide for people's physical needs and reveal the hope of Jesus through our staff teams.
