“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light” Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV). In the book, Gentle and Lowly, author Dane Ortlund discusses this passage in which Jesus chose two words to describe Himself. Why did Jesus choose these interesting descriptors? Gentle – This Greek word means meek and humble. Jesus is, according to Ortland, "not harsh, reactionary, or easily exasperated." He is the most understanding person in the universe. His natural posture is facing His creation with open arms. Lowly – This means that Jesus is easily accessible and approachable. He gives us a picture of the essence of His heart towards us. Jesus knows our lives will be full of toil, labor, and even suffering at times. But He promises rest for our souls. All we have to do is come to experience His gentleness and care. Will you approach Him today with the burdens you carry? He is ready to give you rest.
