Friend ,
Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg made national headlines
in the U.S. over recent days for arguing that the large number of
small-dollar donations being raised by some of his 2020
competitors—namely Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren—won't be enough
to defeat Donald Trump next year.
But Buttigieg is dead wrong. And it has absolutely nothing to do with
whoever you might prefer for president.
Mayor Pete is wrong because what he called "pocket change"—the
small-dollar donations that working people and progressives pool
together as a much-needed antidote to a flailing democracy dominated by
corporate interests, flooded with corporate cash, and largely controlled
by the deep pockets of the nation's wealthiest individuals and families.
It turns out that so-called "pocket change" is also what our progressive
and independent media model has been all about since Common Dreams'
inception.
Do you think there is an army of corporate advertisers who would support
the kind of work we do day in and day out? Do you think that it would be
"viable" to invite a private equity firm in to help us make ends meet?
And even if they did, would you trust us or read us or support us?
Of course not. And that's the way we want it. Your "pocket change" is
what keeps our newsroom lights on and it's what inspires us to keep
going 365 days a year.
So if you have any pocket change, our shoestring budget could really use
a boost today.

Impeachment inquiry. Primary debates. Foreign wars. Climate emergency.
Corporate greed. The world is awash in crises that demand coverage and
analysis. But we can only do the work with your help.
Can you help us with your pocket change today?
