DSA Convention Happening Now; Watch Speakers on YouTube!

DSA’s national convention is ongoing this week, and anyone can watch parts of it live on YouTube! The convention is an event held every two years, in which every DSA chapter across the country comes together to elect new leadership, debate and vote on our national organizing priorities and strategies, attend educational events, and listen to special guest speakers. This year we are also voting on DSA’s first-ever national political platform.

This YouTube channel has a list of all of the convention panels and speakers that will be broadcast to the public. No registration required! These include:

  • “Building A Multiracial Socialist Movement” 8/1 @ 3PM
  • “Socialist Labor Organizing Through the Pandemic” 8/1 @ 3PM

We Need Volunteers Monday (8/2) To Block Eviction of the Unhoused

The City of Sacramento has notified one of the city's largest homeless communities - including families with children - that they will be evicted Monday 8/2. The people of Sacramento must show the local government that we will not accept a return to criminalizing poverty.

PLEASE join us this Monday morning to document the city's illegal and immoral planned eviction. If enough of us show up, there’s no doubt that we can send the cops and the City packing and help our vulnerable neighbors continue living in peace.

Show up by 8:15am, bring a camp chair if you've got one, wear closed-toed shoes and email [email protected] for location and more details.

Meet Your Comrades

Beer & Roses Happy Hour, August 6 @ 6PM in Old Sac

We will be hosting a Beer & Roses (happy hour) on Friday, August 6 from 6-9PM at the outdoor patio area of Honey & The Trapcat in Old Sacramento (1023 Front St Suite A). Drop on by to this casual event and come say hi! New members especially encouraged to attend. Drinking alcohol is not required. Everyone is welcome!

Become a One-on-One Rose Buddy!

Interested in getting more involved with Sac DSA, but don’t know where to start? Or perhaps you’re an experienced member, and want to help some new folks get their bearings?

We’re starting a new “Rose Buddies” program here in Sac DSA, in which newer members can be paired with an experienced member to meet up for a coffee (or whatever else sounds good to you) and get to know more about each other and DSA. Sometimes it helps to have a friend when joining a new group!

New members looking for a buddy can sign up here.

More experienced members looking to mentor a buddy can sign up here.

Sac DSA Housing BBQ on August 14

DSA Sacramento is excited to invite you to attend our Housing BBQ on Saturday August 14th at 5:00PM. We will have free food and a panel of community organizers who are committed to building tenant power in Sacramento. New and existing members of the chapter are encouraged to attend; we will be providing resources to members interested in getting involved in the fight for housing justice, as well as opportunities for new members to get  oriented on the history of Sacramento housing justice.

This event will be held outdoors, at Southside Park (2115 6th Street, Sacramento CA). If you are interested in bringing food, plates/utensils, or any other resources people may need, feel free to sign up to donate those here!

Please remember to RSVP for the BBQ so we can make sure we prepare enough food! You can fill out this form or sign up on Facebook.

DSA Cuba Solidarity is Planning a Sustained National Campaign; Join Us!

The recent escalation of sanctions against Cuba by the Biden administration has made it clear that we will not be returning to the Obama-era detente anytime soon. Rather than take an avenue of peace and reconciliation, the Biden administration has decided to double down on the failed policies of blockade. The embargo (overwhelmingly rejected by the global community) has created untold suffering for the Cuban people, and has greatly inhibited Cuba's ability to combat the COVID pandemic.

Comrades, the time has come to end the illegal US embargo of Cuba.

DSA is uniquely posited to mobilize a national grassroots campaign to counter US sanctions. We are beginning to build a broad network of DSA organizers who can engage in all forms of work. If you are interested in receiving more information about upcoming meetings, events, or actions, please fill out this brief form!

Thank you, comrades. Venceremos!

Posters of the World Unite! Help Us With Social Media or Graphic Design :)

Who says posting isn’t organizing?? If you consider yourself fairly savvy at social media, come help Sac DSA run our social media accounts! We’re looking for volunteers who can sign up to run one or more of our social media accounts (Twitter, Insta and Facebook), even if it’s just one day a week. This basically involves responding to comments and DMs, “liking” comrades’ posts, posting announcements of upcoming events (we’ll help you with text and graphics), and maybe some socialism-related dunks if you’re so inclined. Email us here if you’re interested and let’s talk!

We also have a need for folks with graphic design skills to help us with designing graphic announcements for Sac DSA events, actions and meetings. This is a great way to help the movement if you’re not able to physically make it to a lot of stuff, and to flex your creativity as well! If you’re interested in helping please email us and let us know. Solidarity!

“DSA For The US Postal Service: Dump DeJoy -- Why and How”

Sunday, August 22nd @ 1:00 PM California time, RSVP Here

In the seventh of a series of webinars on saving and improving the postal service, this panel takes up the fight against Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. Trump-crony and Republican megadonor, DeJoy has launched a Ten-Year Plan (“Delivering for America”) featuring mail delay, price hikes, cuts and closures of mail facilities and privatization schemes. Price hikes in August, mail delay in place by September, closures by November, privatization ongoing. Preparing for the fight, this webinar provides an in depth look at why we need to remove DeJoy and how we’re going to do it.

What We're Reading (Or Viewing, Or Listening To...)

This is a space where we share interesting articles, videos, podcasts -- whatever -- that our members have shared with each other online.

“Sacramento raises allowable rent hikes for the year from 6% to 9%” (article)

“Holla at Elliot, thank you for all the work you do!”

“Jolene Versus The Landlord” (video)

“The title attracted me to this brilliant little tale from blogger Caitlin Johnstone. Enjoy”

“Why Sustainable Housing Matters” (video)

“Check this out ! This looks cool!”

“The Paris Commune: A Tiger’s Leap into the Past” (article)

“Interesting read, in this, the 150th anniversary year of the Paris Commune.”

“No Sudden Move” (Movie)

“If you haven’t checked out No Sudden Move yet, it’s an absolute anti-capitalist masterpiece (like many crime films). It explicitly touches on capitalism and it’s role in racial and class inequities, environmental degradation, and the rot at the core of our democracy. Plus, great performances all around”

Spaghetti Feed For the Unhoused” (event)

We’re getting ready for fire season and are working to support our unhoused and immigrant neighbors.

We’re gathering supplies to distribute for protection against wildfire smoke, as well as any items folks who are directly impacted by fires may need.

To help with these efforts, come have dinner with us, hang out with some cool folks and maybe even win something in the auction!
