Friends - Earlier this week, a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill moved one step closer toward becoming law, and is now making its way through Congress. This bill is a good start, and would make critical investments in our nation’s crumbling infrastructure including roads, bridges, railroads, waterways, broadband, and power grids. As I said, the bill is a good start. But the truth is that we need to go bigger, be bolder, and pass the larger $3.5 trillion budget resolution currently in the works through a process known as reconciliation — a package that will address critical problems with our nation’s human infrastructure. What this means is making a generational investment in combating the climate crisis, in child care, family leave, education, health care, housing, and so much more — all while creating millions of good-paying jobs along the way. For the future of our country and of our planet, we simply cannot afford to think small or go for half-measures on this issue. Such an infrastructure package would be the most significant investment in the American people in decades, and would be a profound victory for working families not only in Vermont, but across the country. Passing a landmark resolution like this through the Senate via reconciliation is going to take every single Democratic vote we’ve got. We need to stand together on this issue, which is why I’m asking you today: We cannot rely on or expect a single Republican vote on this. The truth is that Republicans in Congress are more focused on protecting the wealth of billionaires so they can play in outer space without paying taxes than they are on helping working people. The fact is that the American people elected a Democratic House, Senate, and White House last November in order to get big things done. We need to deliver again. I’m not saying that it will be easy. But it’s in embracing this challenge that we help one another, strengthen our economy, protect our planet, make our communities safer, and allow our movement the resources required to make our bold progressive agenda a reality. That’s what this struggle is all about. Thank you for being a part of our fight. All my best, Peter Welch
