Hi There. Does the name “Mylan” ring a bell? It should.
They’re one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. And in 2017, they were caught artificially jacking up the price of insulin by more than 1,000% compared to 2007. In that same time period, their CEO’s salary was raised from $2 million to $19.5 million.
This story should sound familiar because it’s the quintessential tale of corporate greed in the industry. For decades, executives have worked tirelessly to gut our health care system in order to enrich themselves. The good news is that we know of some legislation to help stop it:
House Democrats are moving forward a bill called H.R. 3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act, to cap drug pricing and prevent companies like Mylan from looting the American people. But, in truth, this bill doesn’t go nearly far enough. And we have a shrinking window to demand improvements before it reaches the floor for a vote. Will you call your member of Congress today and demand that they support improvements?
Now, you and I both know that Medicare for All is the real solution to the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs in this country.
When the federal government has the full and exclusive power through Medicare for All to negotiate drug prices with Big Pharma and fund generics if they refuse to lower costs — that’s when we will really bring relief to families who can’t afford their medications.
But if Congress is going to pass this bill now, we need to make sure it is as strong as possible. And then we need to fight like hell for Medicare for All.
We’ve called for actions like this before, and I can tell you: it works. The more calls we drive to these Congressional offices, the more pressure our House Reps will feel.
All I’m asking for is two minutes of your time. I hope you’ll join us.
In solidarity,
Max Cotterill
