Dear John,

Read on for highlights from Health Affairs this week.

What's New In Health Affairs
Ahead of Print
In a new article released ahead of print this week, Jody Heymann and colleagues break down how eligibility requirements for sick leave—as illustrated in the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which provides job protection but no pay—contribute to disparities in leave access.

The authors find that FMLA eligibility restrictions exclude 50.3 percent of private-sector and self-employed workers from coverage. Specifically, "the FMLA’s minimum hours requirement disproportionately excludes women, while its tenure requirement disproportionately excludes Black, Indigenous, and multiracial workers."

On Health Affairs Blog, Katie Keith described the additional changes to HealthCare.gov that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is making as the Biden administration’s broad COVID-19 special enrollment period nears the end.

Health Policy Brief
A Health Policy Brief published this week focuses on public transportation in the US as a driver of health. Wendy Heaps and coauthors discuss how new or expanded public transportation options can improve health and health equity.
