This week's first hearing of the Select Committee on the January 6th attack was extraordinary. The testimony of the four Capitol police officers who battled the rioters was raw and riveting. We won't soon forget it. And we shouldn't.
Here are my biggest takeaways:
-
First, the goal of the attack was to subvert democracy. The testimony confirmed that the rioters wanted to disrupt the certification of the presidential election results - and to attack members of Congress they thought were hostile to their cause.
-
Second, the details matter. The testimony fleshed out in painful detail the sights, sounds, and violence that dominated the Capitol on January 6th. No one can credibly claim anymore that the rioters were "special people" on a tourist visit.
-
Third, a tidal wave of disinformation about the Capitol attack threatens to wash over our country. Powerful media personalities and activists, invested in false stories about the January 6th attack, mocked and mischaracterized the testimony within hours of the hearing.
Our job together is to shed light on January 6th to ensure accountability - and to ensure that nothing like it happens again.
As Secretary of State, I'll do my part to spread the truth about the 2020 election, and to return us to a shared sense of pride in our democracy.
