John,

Before I came to Congress, there was a period in my life where I was
unhoused and living in a car with my two babies.

There were nights where my eyes would water as I fought to stay awake,
worried about what could happen to my children if I fell asleep. We can
and we must build a future where nobody is unhoused.

That’s why yesterday I sent a letter to every one of my Democratic
colleagues telling them we can’t leave D.C. until we pass an extension of
the eviction moratorium. Many of my Democratic colleagues ended up
choosing to go on vacation early rather than stay to vote to keep people
in their homes.

So I slept outside the Capitol last night. Millions are at risk of being
removed from their homes, and a Democratic-controlled government has the
power to stop it. We need to extend the eviction moratorium NOW.

Especially now that the Delta variant is surging, we have a duty to keep
our people housed. I know not all of my colleagues get it, but take it
from the formerly unhoused Congresswoman.

I won’t stop fighting until Congress steps up to address the unhoused
crisis in our country. But I can’t do this work alone,
John.

Our government must not allow any of us to go without shelter, especially
during a public health crisis. Housing is health care, and it is a
fundamental right that should be guaranteed to all.
