John -- Last night Congresswoman Cori Bush slept on the steps of the Capitol building in solidarity with the nearly 7 million Americans facing eviction tomorrow.

The federal eviction moratorium put in place last year to protect renters from losing their homes in the midst of a deadly pandemic is set to expire on August 1st. Both President Biden and the Democratically-controlled Congress have the power to stop it -- but they’ve taken no action.

In fact, the House rushed to adjourn for their August recess yesterday before Reps. AOC and Bush could take the floor to object. Now they won’t be in session again until long after the moratorium is lifted, putting millions of people in danger of losing their homes.

So last night Cori slept outside the Capitol in protest, and called on her fellow Democrats to take action.

This is personal for Cori. As a young single mother of two, Cori once lived out of her car for months after escaping a violent relationship. When she ran for Congress she pledged to fight for housing as a human right, and recently introduced The Unhoused Bill of Rights -- legislation that aims to end homelessness by 2025.

There’s still time for Democrats to fix this today. Democrats control the White House and both chambers of Congress. With the Delta Variant rapidly spreading and infections back on the rise, there is NO EXCUSE for Congress’ failure to act.

Brand New Congress joins Cori Bush in calling for immediate action to extend the eviction moratorium until we get the pandemic under control. We also call on Congress to extend financial support to homeowners unable to pay mortgages due to the pandemic.

After livestreaming her protest on Facebook, Cori was joined by other members of the progressive caucus and activists. They were still there this morning.

The billionaires have plenty of friends in Washington, John. Brand New Congress is working hard to elect representatives who share the lived experiences of the people who need our help the most.

We work year-round to recruit and support progressive fighters like Cori, Nina, Charles Booker, and so many others. But we can’t do this without your help.
