LCA Honors the Brave Rangers at Virunga National Park World Ranger Day - Saturday 7/31/2021 |
|
Dear John, Today LCA honors the brave Rangers at Virunga National Park on World Ranger Day, Saturday, 7/31/2021. World Ranger Day is a time to show gratitude for the dedication and sacrifice of some of nature’s most devoted protectors. Virunga National Park, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is one of the world's oldest and largest parks. It is home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas and over 1,000 other species of animals. Virunga's Rangers are stewards of the Park, proudly dedicating their lives towards its preservation. These dedicated individuals work to protect Africa's oldest national park and its animals from armed groups, illegal poaching, and land encroachments and also work towards peace and prosperity in the region. Since the Park's inception in 1925, 200 Rangers have lost their lives defending Virunga National Park and its animals. Earlier this year, six Rangers were murdered in a violent ambush while on foot patrol near Kabuendo, the central section near Virunga's border. Read more here. |

LCA continues to be a major supporter of Virunga's AirWing program. The AirWing Unit is the Rangers and the animals best line of defense. Recently, construction of a new fortified hangar and Rangers quarters were completed near Virunga's headquarters. The new barracks will house 12 Rangers, complete with showers and toilets. Later this year, the Rangers will begin training in South Africa to learn how to fly the second BatHawk aircraft donated by LCA. Past support has also enabled LCA to help the AirWing Unit purchase an airfield, named LCA/Katale, near their headquarters and build a six-and-a-half-foot bastion wall around the perimeter, helping to keep the Rangers and the Airwing Program safe. LCA honors the brave Virunga Rangers and the dangerous work they do on behalf of animals everyday. We are proud to help support Virunga's AirWing Program! You can help too. Donate today.
